A Lesson in Love
Posted under: This story left me feeling full of warmth and happiness, almost enchanted by the love and devotion demonstrated by an individual. As if there wasn’t enough beauty in the subtropical paradise of Bermuda, this island is also home to an 88 year old ray of sunshine named Johnny Barnes. As the story goes, Johnny is a constant presence at a busy roundabout in Hamilton, Bermuda. Through simple acts like smiling, waving, laughing, and blowing kisses, Johnny spreads his positivity from 4:00AM to 10:00AM each weekday. While Johnny’s desire to profess his love for each passing motorist is undoubtedly quirky, the citizens of Hamilton have grown to count on his grounding presence. One Hamilton resident shares her perspective with this touching story:
“There was a morning where I was traveling into the city. It was not a happy morning and I could see in the distance Johnny Barnes. And I had made up my mind I was not going to look because I wanted to hold on to my unhappy moment. But I… I ended up looking at him and sure enough, he forced me to smile and remember that I had a choice for my day. To smile and be happy or carry this heavy weight of anger with me. And that’s what he reminds me of. Everyday that there’s a choice in how we start our day.“
